Getting visible on Google in your city: a guide for local businesses

Business profile, website, reviews, area pages - what makes a local business show up in Google's local searches.

When someone searches for "electrician in Manchester" or "locksmith near me", Google first shows a map with a few businesses, then a list of websites. Being in both places means getting calls from people who need you right now. Here is what matters.

The two areas to occupy

  • The map (the "local pack"): it shows Google business profiles. It mainly depends on how relevant your profile is, the distance from the person searching and your prominence (reviews, mentions).
  • The regular results: they show websites. They depend on the quality and relevance of pages and on the links they receive.

Many businesses only work on their profile. The two complement each other.

1. A complete business profile

  • Choose the right primary category (your exact trade) and a few secondary ones.
  • Add your opening hours, service area, phone number and website.
  • Add real photos: you, your van, your work.
  • Describe your services in simple words, the ones your customers use.
  • Post an update or a finished job from time to time.

2. Regular reviews

Ask every satisfied customer for a review right after the job. Reply to all reviews, including bad ones, calmly and politely. A steady flow of recent reviews counts more than a big old batch. Never buy fake reviews: it is forbidden and risky.

  • One page per main service (repairs, installation, renovation…).
  • Your area clearly stated: city, neighbourhoods or towns served, without copying the same page and only changing the town name.
  • A visible phone number you can tap on mobile, a short form, and WhatsApp if possible.
  • A fast site: most local searches happen on a phone.
  • Useful content: indicative prices, tips, frequently asked questions.

4. Identical information everywhere

Your name, address and phone number should be written the same way on your profile, your website and the directories you are listed in. Inconsistencies create doubt for Google and for customers alike.

A link from a partner's website, a local association or a regional media outlet strengthens your site. A few quality links are worth more than many unrelated ones.

Common mistakes

  • A profile without photos or opening hours.
  • A website without a visible phone number on mobile.
  • Dozens of identical pages, one per town.
  • Never asking for reviews.

What if you don't have the time?

Building a website and getting it to rank takes time and skills. That is what RankoWeb does: we build and rank websites by trade and by area, and rent each one to a single professional. You receive the calls and requests without managing the site. To go further, also read how to get recommended by ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Google business profile enough?

It is essential but not always enough. A well-ranked website also gets you into the regular results and serves as a source for AI assistants.

How long does it take to appear in local searches?

It depends on the competition in your trade and your city. A complete profile and regular reviews often show first effects within a few weeks; a website usually takes longer.

Do I need a physical address?

Businesses that travel to their customers can set a service area without showing an address, according to Google's rules.
